We've always liked Numeroff's If You Give... series. When we read the opening sentence of If You Give a Cat a Cupcake and it mentioned sprinkles I knew we had a new favorite.
To go along with this book, I set up a pretend cupcake making and decorating station. I set out paper tubes cut into smaller pieces, cotton balls, watercolor paint, sparkly pipe cleaners cut into pieces, and pom poms. There was absolutely no interest whatsoever. I reluctantly added glitter shakers and we had a winner. (If you want to keep the finished cupcakes add some glue to your supplies, but we were playing and the glitter sticks well enough to the cotton balls for that.)
After they filled the paper rolls with enough cotton balls to make it look like a cupcake, they explored different ways to use the materials. My five year old used the paint to decorate his cupcake wrappers.
My four year old used the paint to color her cupcakes.
The one thing they both did was to use lots of glitter. Lots and lots and lots of glitter.
But they did turn out cute.

Such a fun book and activity!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing and hosting the Virtual Book Club for Kids this month featuring one of my favorite authors Laura Numeroff. They simply spark so much creativity in our kids which reflect in your cupcake activity you're sharing. I can imagine my girsl will have just as much fun creating their own cupcakes too.
