American Flag Plant Marker: Craft for Kids

I received some goodies from Craft Project Ideas recently. Among other things, there were jumbo craft sticks, star stickers, and red glitter. It was the perfect opportunity for the kids and me to make some craft stick flags inspired by Ginger Snap Crafts to dress up our front porch for the 4th of July.

I got the paint from Walmart.
For each flag we used:
7 jumbo craft sticks
red, white, and blue paint
star glitter foam stickers
glitter (optional)
glue, scissors
bamboo skewer

We painted five of the sticks: 1 red, 1 white, 2 half red/half white, 1 half red/half white.

Some of us added a generous sprinkle of red glitter to the wet craft sticks.

I cut the last two craft sticks (you can use scissors to cut them), so that they fit vertically underneath the five colored sticks. I used hot glue to affix them but if you want kids to do it, regular white glue works too.

Finally, I glued a bamboo skewer to the back and covered the flags with a coat of clear spray paint to protect them.

We put them in the potted plants on our front steps. They would also be cute lined up along the front walk.

A great book to read with this craft is Stars and Stripes: The Story of the American Flag by Sarah L. Thomson. It invites readers to travel back in time and witness firsthand how our flag came to be.
