We are no strangers to combining books and activities around here, but this was our first experience with BabbaBox, a box with fun activities for 3-6 olds that's shipped right to your house. And it includes a book! There's something so exciting about seeing that box at your door. The kids were jumping up and down to see what was inside and I was so grateful to have everything we needed already gathered, right down to the stir stick. How awesome is that? Not one single time did I have to go digging in my overstuffed craft closet while the kids tried to feed glue to the dog.
There was lots to explore in our Babbabox: a book called Twinkle, Star of the Week!, directions and materials for a moon nightlight, binoculars to observe the moon, a calendar to keep track of the moon's cycles, directions and materials for a constellation frame, opportunities to engage in digital content, and even a gift for me.
In spite of all these wonderful choices, my kids knew exactly what they wanted to start with: the moon nightlight. We got started ripping our paper (included!) into strips. We poured two parts glue (included!) into the bowl (included!), added one part water, and stirred it with the stick (included!) Have I mentioned how much I like the fact that everything you need is included?
Next we dunked our torn paper strips into the glue mixture and started draping it over the balloon (included! Okay, I'll stop now.) that was held by another bowl (they even thought to include that. That was the last one, I swear.), leaving a little open space at the bottom of the balloon. We let the first layer dry overnight and then applied another layer the next day.
When the second layer was dry, we popped the balloon. I expected an actual balloon popping sound, but what really happened was waaaay more interesting. The balloon slowly deflated and pulled away from the sides, making a very interesting noise.
Once we had the balloon out we put in the tea light (You know. I won't say it.), took our moon nightlight into a dark room, and admired it for a long time.
We also enjoyed the book, Twinkle, Star of the Week! by Joan Holub, which is a cute story about a star who is searching for the perfect thing to share with her class when something magical happens...
Another great thing about the Babbabox is that there is still more to explore throughout the month! The constellation frame is next on our list!
