Ice Cream Play Dough

Since we had so much fun with our ice cream literacy and math, we checked out another ice cream book from the library by one of our favorite authors, Mo Willems.   Should I Share My Ice Cream? is an Elephant and Piggie book in which Gerald must decide if he should share his ice cream with Piggie.

After our book we whipped up a batch of ice cream play dough using the recipe found here.  I liked that the kids could help with all of it, but didn't like that it was a little grainy from the salt (although the kids didn't mind that a bit.)  I wish I would have thought to add vanilla or cherry extract to make it smell more like ice cream.

I also made some ice cream cones from brown construction paper and got out the ice cream scoop, which both my kids are fascinated with.  We got to making some ice cream cones.

Then I put out some cupcake liners and we made some sundaes.  When they were bored with that, I pulled out my secret weapon...sprinkles.

When we were done playing, I packed up the play dough, sprinkles and all.  A few hours later, I checked to see what it looked like.  The sprinkles start to bleed their color into the dough similar to our sprinkle fireworks.  

The kids loved playing with it again.  After a while, the sprinkles dissolve and make the play dough an unattractive color, but in the meantime the swirls of rainbow color make it even more fun.
