Ice Cream Literacy and Math

We recently read a cute story called Simply Delicious!  It's about a father who buys a "double-dip-chocolate-chip-and-cherry ice cream with rainbow twinkles and chopped nut sprinkles" for his son.  He must ride his bike home to get it to his son, so he decides to take a shortcut through the jungle.  One by one, different jungle animals spot the ice cream cone and chase Mr. Minky, who cleverly avoids them.  By the time he safely delivers the ice cream cone to his son there is a string of animals following including butterflies, a toucan, a spider monkey, a tiger and a crocodile.  But now the animals are so hungry, they turn on each other!

Since we were reading about ice cream, I cut out a whole bunch of ice cream cones and scoops from scrapbook paper to use for literacy and math practice.

Literacy - Letter Recognition
I glued down a cone for each letter in my kids' names and wrote the letter on the cone and on the scoop so they could match them.  Lainey had the same letters on each, but Drew matched the capital to the lower case letter.

Math - Number Recognition

I glued down four cones and put the numbers 1-4 on each.  Drew glued down the correct number of scoops for each cone.

Math - Patterning

This time I used a long piece of paper and ice cream scoops in two different patterns.  (You could just use different colors, but my son is colorblind so I wanted to focus on the patterns)  I started patterns that he finished.
