Scaredy Squirrel Acorn Treat

One of our favorite ways to extend a book is by making a fun snack. My kids loved these little acorn treats we made for Scaredy Squirrel and they were easy to make.

Two days ago my son filled up my big cooking pot with water and put it on the deck next to a bowl of acorns for the squirrels.  Then he thought about it for a minute and put the lid on the pot so the dog wouldn't drink the water before the squirrels could get to it.  Gotta love 3 year old logic. 

He's been on the lookout for squirrels a lot lately and I suspect it's because on Labor Day his older cousins kept yelling, "Drew, look at the squirrel!" and the poor little guy would dutifully look every. single. time. Of course there never was a squirrel (This would be my husband's side of the family. My niece and nephews would never do such a thing.)

With all the squirrel mania, I just had to get a copy of Scaredy Squirrel.  It's the cutest story about a squirrel who is afraid of everything.  He even has an emergency kit in case of trouble.  He won't leave his tree and has a list of things that he is scared of.  When he is forced to leave his tree, he discovers that he is actually a flying squirrel and his daily routine gets shaken up a bit!

After our story we collected acorns for Scaredy Squirrel, played find the acorn (taking turns hiding and finding them), and made these "acorn" snacks from Family Fun:

We used chocolate kisses, mini vanilla wafers, and cracker sticks (you could also use pretzel sticks) held together with some chocolate frosting.

They were delicious!
